Bowing To Wanderlust...
17 days to go and we'll be flying to Rio! It seems the longer you have dreamed of doing something, the harder it is to comprehend the reality that it is going to happen when the dream comes true. Which explains why the '17 days' does not fill me with the sense of urgency that it perhaps should, to sort out all the remaining organising we have to do!
Having so much organising is largely self inflicted of course. If we were doing the kind of trip where we stayed in a place til we'd had enough and had no time limits then nothing would need pre-organising. But we only have 6 months which is relatively very short, hence we have gone for the 'we'll only do this once so let's do and see as much as possible' approach.
This suits us for many reasons but I guess the key ones are firstly that we have an ever increasing list of places we want to see after this trip - it is extremely unlikely that we will be the type to 'get it out of our system'! Having dropped a couple of places from our original plan to go back to Nepal because we can't stay away from the place and of course because we are getting married there, we can't miss out on any others!
Secondly, we love the planning! The commonplace becomes exciting - the train station I get off at every morning is exciting because in a few months I'll be arriving at Hue train station. A sunny blue sky is exciting because in a few weeks I'll be seeing blue skies over Lake Titicaca. Reading a book in my lunch break is exciting because I'll soon be reading books on too many flights. Rain is exciting because in a few weeks I'll no doubt be getting wet in Torres del Paine! It is important that we live in the moment while we're travelling, but while life is in the ordinary get up and go to work phase, part of the savouring of each moment is enjoying the expectation of what is to come. The same things will no doubt cause nostalgia when we return, but then we will have new adventures planned to dream of! Until then, looking forward to 6 months of filling the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds worth of distance run.
